HyFuelUp Showcased in Aqua & Gas as a Breakthrough for the Future of Renewable Methane

The HyFuelUp project has taken a prominent place in the latest issue of Aqua & Gas (No. 9/2025), one of Switzerland’s leading trade journals for energy, water and gas technologies. The magazine, known for its in-depth technical reporting and its focus on innovation in the utilities sector, dedicates six full pages to an exploration of HyFuelUp’s technological approach and its relevance for Europe’s evolving energy landscape.

In the feature, HyFuelUp partner AlphaSYNT presents the project’s distinctive concept: a hybrid process that combines continuous biomass gasification with the flexible input of green hydrogen, marking the first time such an approach is deployed at this scale. According to AlphaSYNT, this configuration enables stable, efficient methane production capable of adapting both to variable gas qualities and to the increasingly volatile electricity market.

A key element highlighted in the article is the fluidised bed methanation reactor developed by AlphaSYNT, now being implemented for the first time under real industrial conditions. This reactor represents a significant advance in methanation technology thanks to its robustness, modularity and ability to operate efficiently under fluctuating process parameters.

The magazine emphasises that the HyFuelUp project is entering a decisive stage on its path towards market readiness, positioning itself as an important technological building block for tomorrow’s renewable energy system.

As Andreas Aeschimann, Managing Director at AlphaSYNT, explains in the article: “For us, HyFuelUp is a milestone. We can demonstrate our modular methanation technology on an industrial scale under real conditions for the first time. In doing so, we are laying the foundation for wide-scale deployment in the energy system of the future.”
