The European biomethane sector continues to expand at a remarkable pace. According to the latest figures published by the European Biogas Association (EBA), Europe has added more than 1 billion cubic metres (bcm) of annual biomethane production capacity over the past year, reaching a total installed capacity of 8.2 bcm per year. The number of operational biomethane plants has also increased to almost 2,000 facilities across the continent.
The new data, presented alongside the European Biomethane Map 2026, highlight the growing role of biomethane in Europe’s renewable energy mix. At the same time, the EBA underlines that Europe has the potential to accelerate deployment even further through continued investment, supportive policies and technological innovation.
This evolving landscape reinforces the importance of research and innovation initiatives such as HyFuelUp. The project is demonstrating an innovative pathway for the efficient and cost-effective production of biomethane in an industrial environment by combining gasification, methanation and renewable hydrogen. By advancing these technologies, HyFuelUp aims to contribute to increasing renewable gas production while supporting Europe’s transition towards a more sustainable and circular bioeconomy.
As the biomethane sector continues to grow, projects like HyFuelUp play an important role in developing the next generation of technologies that will help unlock the full potential of renewable gases and strengthen Europe’s energy resilience.
