EU approves €140m state aid for Portugal’s biomethane production

The European Commission approved a €140 million Portuguese scheme to support the production of renewable hydrogen and biomethane to foster the transition to a net-zero economy, in line with the Green Deal Industrial Plan.

The scheme was approved to support measures in sectors which are key to accelerate the green transition and reduce fuel dependencies.

That is also HYFUELUP project‘s ambition, as the biomethane produced within the project will then be liquified and used for the decarbonization of long-distance road freight transport and maritime transportation.

In fact, this biomethane is intended for use in areas not covered by the distribution networks, such as AGUs, CNG and CNG and LNG filling stations across the Portuguese territory, accelerating the introduction of renewable gases in these two key sectors and, therefore, collaborating in the energy transition in the EU.
