CoLAB BIOREF highlights the role of biomethane in the energy transition through Kéramica magazine article

CoLAB BIOREF, coordinator of the HyFuelUp project, has published an opinion article in Kéramica magazine addressing the strategic importance of biomethane for the energy transition and industrial decarbonisation.

The article, entitled “Biomethane: One of the Main Bets for a True Energetic Transition”, was written by Joana Bernardo, Technical Scientific Director of BIOREF. It explores the growing relevance of sustainable and renewable energy solutions in a context where reducing dependence on fossil fuels has become increasingly urgent.

Particular attention is given to the ceramic sector, an industry highly dependent on natural gas and a significant contributor to the Portuguese economy. The publication highlights how the sector is progressively strengthening its international presence while also facing the challenge of adapting its industrial processes to cleaner, more sustainable energy systems.

The article also highlights Portugal’s efforts to develop best practices for the energy transition, especially in energy-intensive industries where technological adaptation and innovation are essential to achieving climate goals.

Within this context, biomethane is presented as a promising solution capable of contributing to the decarbonisation of industrial activities while supporting energy resilience and sustainability. The publication also references the HyFuelUp project and its work to advance innovative biomethane solutions and to foster the deployment of sustainable fuels across Europe.
