The European Union‘s strong commitment to accelerating biomethane production and finding innovative, accessible, and more efficient ways of obtaining it is not limited to HYFUELUP but has led to three other projects funded under Horizon Europe. They are known as the ‘Sister Projects’ and these are our joint policy recommendations on biomethane:
- BIOMETHAVERSE aims to boost biomethane production in Europe through demonstrated non-conventional production routes, with a circular approach to energy and materials use, and ensuring rapid market access of technologies and replicability of routes. The demonstration of thermochemical, biochemical, electrochemical, and biological routes will take place in France, Greece, Italy, Sweden and Ukraine.
- METHAREN aims to demonstrate an innovative concept to efficiently convert electricity into gas through a cost-effective, innovative, more sustainable, and circular biomethane production system to manage the intermittency of renewable energy sources. The demonstration site of the project will be the ACEA waste treatment plant in Pinerolo (Italy).
- SEMPRE-BIO aims to ensure cost-effective domestic biomethane production by proposing efficient biomethane production solutions and pathways. It will create three European biomethane innovation ecosystems based in Adinkerke (Belgium), Baix Llobregat (Spain) and Bourges (France), which are representative of the European biomethane innovation ecosystems.
