Reduce shipping and aviation emissions by promoting SAF and cleaner energy

All aircraft departing from an EU airport from 2025 will have to run partly on green fuel, according to an agreement reached by the European Parliament and the Council of Europe that aims to reduce the aviation sector’s carbon footprint.

Under this proposal, the percentage of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to be blended with kerosene will start at 2% in 2025, rising to 6% in 2030, 20% in 2035, 34% in 2040 and reaching 70% in 2050.

Besides, flights will carry an EU “eco-label” from 2025 indicating the carbon footprint of the journey and revenues from fines for non-compliance with the new rules will be used to research innovative forms of SAF, as those proposed by HYFUELUP project.

In addition, the approved FuelEU maritime regulation will oblige ships over 5,000 gross tonnes, responsible for 90% of the #shipping sector’s CO2 emissions, to progressively reduce the greenhouse gas emission intensity of the energy used on board in case they are calling at European ports.
